Ocean Champions
A Journey into Seas of Plastic
by Michelle Mech
Release Date: June 2017

CDN$ 13.95

Ocean Champions - A Journey into Seas of Plastic tells a tale of two children, Kai and Morgan, who are playing on a beach and make friends with Botley, a plastic bottle who is afraid of being washed into the ocean. They soon discover a dolphin tangled in fishing net and call a rescue centre for help. The rescuers arrive in the super submersible, Spirit, and thus begins a journey of discovery to witness firsthand other animals that have become entangled in plastic debris or have ingested it. As they travel from place to place, including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the North Pacific Ocean, they learn more about ocean plastic and also why our oceans are so important.

Just before their adventure comes to an end, everyone aboard Spirit is greeted by the dolphin they helped and many of her friends, who ask the children for their help. When Kai and Morgan return home they raise awareness about plastic in the oceans and inspire and initiate several positive actions in their school and community, becoming true ocean champions.

The book includes an addendum, which contains more information about plastic in our oceans, as well as ways that each of us can reduce our use of plastic and examples of student projects. Ocean Champions empowers children, teachers, families, and others to take action to help.
